What single activity can I do to make me stand out to a college?

Question by superman’s twin: What single activity can I do to make me stand out to a college?
Some ideas I’ve heard are writing a kids book, doing a fundraiser that lasts several months to raise thousands of dollars for a chairty, write an editorial for a local newspaper, win a state tournament (that is not really in my control though). I’m looking for some other ideas I can do in my spare time over 1-2 years, like the book idea, that I can possibly do in my home. I already have great grades and other EC activities, but I want a single incredible thing I can do. Something I want to do but I don’t know if it would work is making a website that gets thousands of visitors, but I don’t know how I would promote it to reach that goal, any ideas on this would be apprecaited.

Start a community service club. Nothing tops starting a community service club.

I think a fundraiser is the best idea. Especially if you can get some good coverage from not just your school, but maybe even your whole town. If you have recommendations from city officals because of work you did, it will definitely stand out that you are a go-getter.

Do something that you are passionate about. College admissions people are really good at seeing through someone who is just accumulating points to score in the annual admissions derby.

I am wanting to do something like this too, but I’m not sure what. My best idea is to start a volunteer project – not join one, start one. I was thinking about contacting the local elementary school to see what programs are needed, such as a youth mentoring program or a children’s beginning Spanish class. Also, you could talk to the Kiwanis in your area about sponsoring a Builder’s Club, which is a Jr. High volunteering club designed to get middle school kids involved in their opportunity. Good luck! I would love to know what you come up with.

Volunteer work is great. Find something you like and see if there’s an organization that has volunteers. Things like zoos, camps, the YMCA… or get into teen mentoring, tutoring, or whatever.

Not only can you put it on your application, it also exposes you to people who can write you really impressive recommendations and gives you something to write about in your application essay.

Something like a website is great, but it’s just you working alone on it. They love to see kids who get out and interact and are into community activities.

The three top students in my graduating class all were in the national honor society. They all taught sunday school and did tutoring for special ed children.

I have just graduated from a prestigious University the past May, and what I found impressive among the top students at school were that they are all individually unique. Just be yourself, and do the things you actually care for, not simply to just get into a college. Believe me ppl at the admissions office can tell. For instance, I once heard a story of a girl that had organized a group to plant a tree for every person that died from the 9/11 tragedy, simply because she cared.

    best of luck to you.

Forget all the volunteer. Make speeches, represent the school, get close with professors, president, and board of trustees. Help the school make money or get more donation/endowment.

There are a number of free resources available to advertise your website and increase traffic. You can advertise on relevant free classifieds ( http://www.craigslist.org) ,directories (dmoz) and relevant forums. Major search engines like Yahoo, Google , MSN search are a major source of visitors for most websites and you can submit your website to these search engines for free. You can also run contests offering prizes to regular visitors. I have found the following website useful
