Don't choose on trends or what's popular, choose on what you are passionate about. You'll write a better book if it's about something you are passionate about which may be in demand rather than a book that may be about a popular subject matter, but lacks passion.

Children's books are in bigger demand. That said, I gave the thumbs up to the person that told you not to write for money.

I think kids would be more popular, seeing as how everyone could read it, kids, teens, adults, and so on.
Just a bit of advice, don't talk down to kids. I remember when I was little, I had a VERY big vocabulary, and I read a pre-teen book that said this, "She knows big words like combustion because she's a poet." I had the urge to put the book down.

You should write whatever you're inspired to write. Don't pick a genre or an audience and then decide to write for it because you think it will sell more, or you will end up writing a terrible book. If you're writing a book, you should do it because you have a story in your head that you feel you absolutely HAVE to tell.
