If they are into into nature and whatnot, which I was at that age. I'd recommend the books hatchet, brains winter, and the river. Hatchet would be the first book and the theme is that a 14 year old boy flys into the alps to visit his lumberjack Father. B4 he leaves his mother buys him a hatchet( hence the name) to help choP trees. Although, his pilot has a heart attack and the plane crashes. Brian must survive in the wild with only a hatchet. Very good books, I read them all in 5th grade.
